Nature is Part of Me

by Rio Mihashi

A cedar tree drawn only in outline. The outline of the tree is in white with a brown background

Every now and then,
for a several minutes or even seconds,
once in several years or even centuries,
nature opens its door
to invite me into their realm.

When a perfect ray of sunlight hits
a row of five cedar trees,
when a big thunderstorm rolls over
a forest filled with tall oak trees.
When nature’s particles experience
unusual shakes,
it opens up its door to me.

I have to be ready, too.
Joy, sadness, happiness, fear…
When my particles experience
unusual shakes,
I have my strength to walk into the door.

What happens to me then?
It’s simple- I become a part of them.
They don’t accept me wholeheartedly,
or reject me in cold blood.
But that sense of belonging brings me
an immense comfort and relief
at the deepest level of my being.

Even when I’m surrounded with
thousands of humans during rush hour,
even when I leave my hometown
to live on the other side of the planet,
even when I lay on a hospital bed
because my heart failed you,
the feeling of belonging never goes away.

Whatever happens in my life,
I am now a part of nature,
and nature is now a part of me.
